How did you get started with bodybuilding/fitness?

My journey in fitness began through merely working out to lose weight. I had never really been athletic or even been in a real gym, I didn’t know what to do and I was intimidated to get started as most everyone experiences but I knew I had to start doing something! I spent 1 year in the gym doing nothing but cardio, while my husband continually encouraged me to begin lifting with him I wasn’t quite there yet and had that perception that women didn’t need to lift weights.

It was a process, I became more confident in the weight section of the gym and as I began to see my body transform and take shape I developed a passion to take fitness to another level.

How do you stay so motivated? What drives you?

My main source of motivation comes from within. As a wife, mother and health care professional I have a responsibility to be a strong healthy example for my family and the community. I set goals, add variety to my workout routines and reach out to friends with a shared zest for lifting to maintain my motivation!

What is your training routine like?

As a figure competitor I train with a focus on back, legs, shoulders and glutes. In the off season I do cardio 4 days a week and lift 6 days per week. During prep I typically do 45 minutes of interval cardio 6 days a week and 6 days of lifting. I periodize my training by varying rep ranges from week to week.

If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

Squats, pull ups and lateral raises. These exercises help to develop that V-shape taper; making you wider at the top, tight and narrow through the waist with lean and shapely legs.

What is your favourite form of cardio?

High intensity interval training is definitely my favorite and I mostly do stair sprints using the stair climber, sprints/hill sprints or jump rope. I will do 3-4 minutes of low intensity steady state and 60 seconds of an all out give it all you got sprint interval and repeat!

What is your diet like?

My diet is based around my goals. I eat 5-6 meals per day. I find that I have better results eating whole, non-processed foods. During off season if I am working on building up a certain area I will eat more. If I am prepping for a show I will alter my carbs based on my training and have a high carb day on leg days and lower carbs on the other days.

My coach adjusts my diet as needed. I have cheat meals and enjoy my favorite goodies on vacation and special events during off season.

What supplements do you use?

I use a pre-workout supplement, whey protein and branch chain amino acids.

What are the highlights of your fitness career?

Winning 1st place in Figure Novice at my very first figure competition was certainly a fitness highlight for me. Each competition has actually been a highlight as I have learned and been able to bring a better package and accomplish goals with each show.
