How did you get started with bodybuilding?

I started at age 17 on my own accord. I wanted a way to shape my body like the models in the Shape and Oxygen Magazines I read and decided to try weight lifting. My high school had a grungy gym in the basement that I was allowed to use all to myself in the mornings before school and my dedication to training stuck throughout university and into adulthood.

How do you stay so motivated? What drives you?

Good question and thank you for your interest in me. I am motivated right now being put in this position, realizing that my achievements and decisions have elevated me to the top of my sport and that others are inspired by my accomplishments. It feels good to give yourself credit for hard work and take a moment to be proud. At this point in my life, it’s automatic to be active everyday. I wake up excited to go outside for a bike ride or rollerblade and my day always includes a trip to the gym to lift because I don’t know any other way. This is my first time in 11 years where I am not competing and the break was good for me, because I am loving weight training again.

I love the way my body feels during and after a good workout – and most importantly – I love who I am when I am confident, fit and energetic. There have been some unhealthy times in my life recently, so I know the alternative. The choice to stay on track to be healthy is easy because it betters my life in every way.

What is your training routine like?

It’s summer in Canada right now, so I am enjoying the outdoors as much as possible. Currently I do some sort of cardio everyday and lift for half an hour to an hour. I will take a rest day here and there if I want to, but it’s very rare. My lifting schedule is legs, hamstring/glute/calf priority, shoulders/tris/abs, back/bis/obliques, glutes/abs, repeat. This varies but I am trying to build my muscularity up again so I am giving my legs more rest between training.

If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

Stiff-legged Deadlifts are my absolutely favourite for building glutes and hamstrings. Next must have exercise would be Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press superset with Standing Reverse Dumbbell Flyes (does that count as one exercise? 😛 )… and… hmm, how can I limit myself to just a few exercises? Probably Jump Squats is the final one I couldn’t live without. This is easy to do anywhere, is great both for building muscle and leaning out legs and is fun too.

What is your favourite form of cardio?

You don’t follow me on my social media if you’re asking this question! You should know, I am a #rollerbabe and like to post my cute outfits and share my daily rollerblading adventures online.

What is your diet like?

lol! I picked the wrong day to answer this question, if I’m being honest. I went grocery shopping last night and bought some healthy cookies and chips along with my veggies, tuna, steak, green apples, avocado and kale. The junk is already gone! Because it’s summer and I am not training specifically for anything, my diet is relaxed. I will go out for a nice dinner and not alter the order to cut fat – and WILL have dessert! But I like to eat well, almost always fresh veggies and meats. I don’t eat a lot of chicken these days, nor do I have dairy in my diet on the regular basis.

What supplements do you use?

I love creatine, BCAAs the pre workouts.

What are the highlights of your fitness career?

What a blessed career it is. I continued to compete year after year because I had such amazing support from sponsors and family, and felt so lucky to be healthy enough to compete with the top fitness models from around the world – and win on occasion!! 🙂 The highlights were the wins, of course, being my first amateur show where I did a fitness routine and shocked myself to win against gymnastics, professional cheerleaders and dance instructors. I went on to fight a few years to finally win the title of Miss Fitness Manitoba, so that achievement was a good one. I am also proud of the accomplishments of my hundreds of clients over the years, both competitive and non-competitive. It has been a honour to help change the lives of others for the better, to help them embrace fitness and increase their quality of life and confidence. Finally, turning Pro and going on to win 2 International Pro Championships to be crowned a 2x champion is a dream come true. Becoming involved in fitness competitions means a unique lifestyle where you are restricted socially to ensure you stay on track with your training.

There are many many sacrifices I made to become one of the best in the world, but the experiences I had were worth it. If you want to have an exceptional life, doing what you love, travelling the world, you have to be willing to put in the work to earn it and then to keep it. I will forever be grateful for the people who believe in me and am excited for what’s next in my career.
