How did you get started with bodybuilding?

After having my second child and just simply trying to lose the additional weight gained, on top of that I accumulated from my first pregnancy, I decided it was time to stop making excuses and start doing something about it. Being a driven female that has always played sports and danced professionally as a young girl, I was no stranger to hard work and dedication it takes to achieve your goals. We searched around and checked out several gyms that offered child care and the YMCA was the one that fit our needs best. After joining and hitting up every class I was able to get to with little sleep and between feedings and naps, I started dropping weight and feeling great. The instructor for one of my classes mentioned a “competition diet” to help me with my needs. Once I looked into this more I decided that is what I needed to REALLY push me, so I signed up for my very first NPC show to give me a goal to shoot for. What motivates you more than knowing you will be standing on a stage in close to nothing to be judged by strangers!? Lol. Sounds insane, but that’s the realm many athletes live in.

I finally made it to my first show with some julep from a trainer, and I won! Not just my class, but the Overall! It was an AMAZING feeling to have my family there to witness that!! It showed that hard work and determination pays off! I went on to win several more and place in the top spots leading me on the fast track to the Pro’s!

How do you stay so motivated? What drives you?

My family, my friends, and truly my fans! All the stories of people around me and strangers alike that have decided to take that step and make that change to live a healthier lifestyle. I fall off just like anyone, but it only reminds me as to why making this a “lifestyle” change and not a yo-yo diet is the only way to truly stay healthy and happy. What is your training routine like?

Now that I have backed down with the number of shows I am competing in, I have a bit more of a normal workout regimen. I’m in 3-4 times a week plus 1 Yoga class a week to really get a nice deep stretch and alignment. (This helps to keep injuries at bay).

  • 10 min warmup (stretch for 5 and walking for 5)
  • 45-60 min of cardio whether it’s a kickboxing class, High Intensity Interval Training, Zumba, or a self made treadmill workout.
  • 30-45 min of weight training
  • 15 min (5 min stretch and 10 min steam)

If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

  1. Shoulders: any of the shoulder raises will do, it really helps to define the arms and give us women the strength we need to lift heavy objects and perform well in other physical activities.
  2. Deadlifts: focus on lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. These muscles help keep your spine in line, and aid in your posture so you will slouch less. 🙂
  3. Burpees: a great all over move to hit the entire body, great for a quick workout with little time, and can be modified to assist first-timers and injuries. Exclusive Interview With Fitness Model And Bikini Athlete Cara Christensen

What is your favourite form of cardio?

Cybex Arc for cardio: easy on my joints and a targeted legs and core workout.

What is your diet like?

Low sugar-low sodium organic whole fruits and veggies, wheat, meat and veggies, oh my! 😉 Some gluten-free breads and pastas now. I try and keep all natural ingredients, with a solid balance of complex-carbs (The good kind of carbs), green veggies, lean meat and fish, and wholesome beneficial fruits. Water or tea only, don’t eat out too much, stay away (as much as possible) boxed, bagged, and canned goods. Fresh is best! 🙂 Exclusive Interview With Fitness Model And Bikini Athlete Cara Christensen

What supplements do you use?

All types of vitamins, most of which your body is not able to reproduce by itself or is not obtained from the foods that I eat, in the amounts that I need. CLA, Extended Release Iron, Flaxseed Oil, Glucosamine Chondroitin, Amino Acids, Calcium, Magnesium, Vit C, Vit D, Vit E, Vit A, and Skin-Hair-Nails support. As women age so do many things we never had to worry about before. I’ll do whatever I can to stay as natural and as healthy as can be, for as long as I am living and breathing. 🙂

What are the highlights of your fitness career?

Everything! It has changed not only my physique, and my health, but also my life! I have been able to influence so many women around the world, and help change the lives of others in the most astounding ways. Saving lives just by others watching my journey and seeing you can do it, restoring confidence, inspiring purpose, and being a sort of support system for those who have found none in those around them.
