How did you get started with bodybuilding?

I fit into one of those cliché “always been an athlete” through high school and college stories. I was a long distance cross country runner, competed in a marathon, and in high school and college, was on the swim team – butterfly was my stroke.

I didn’t turn to the weights until I hired a personal trainer “to tone up” (I can’t believe I once actually said that) – who became one of my closest friends and introduced me to the sport of competing. From then on, I was hooked!

How do you stay so motivated? What drives you?

You know the old saying, “motivation is fleeting, discipline is not”, so I would say that the satisfaction for getting knowing that I have conquered another day gives me the drive and motivation I need to push onto the next level. Going to bed feeling accomplished keeps me going. One day at a time.

What is your training routine like?

I try to hit my weak parts (legs) twice a week, and spend the rest of the week focusing on certain muscle groups. When you compete, it’s important to be ascetic and equally proportioned. I try to give every muscle group a day of their own so I can really focus on it.

If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

  1. Lunges! Amazing for the booty, and you can increase or decrease your step to target more quads or hamstrings.
  2. Cable upright rows. When working with cables you are able to keep the muscle under tension during the eccentric and concentric portion of the exercise.
  3. Assisted pull-ups. I like starting off “back days” with really slow wide grip pull ups to focus on engaging my lats.

What is your favourite form of cardio?

Lifting weights really fast!! In all seriousness, cardio is an important aspect to staying lean, however, no amount of cardio can outwork a poor diet.

What is your diet like?

While I’m on prep, my diet is VERY strict. I weigh out every gram of protein, fats, and carbohydrates. I eat 6 meals a day, with 4oz of protein, and eat carbs -(sweet potatoes, or brown rice) and fats (avocado, almond butter) accordingly.

Off-season isn’t too much different. I still weigh everything out, get in 6 meals a day, but I have a little more leniency with cheat meals. Did someone say in-n-out?

Even so, I limit my cheat meals to maybe once a week. My off-season guilty pleasure is a pop tart right before my leg day.

What supplements do you use?

While preparing for a show, I will only eat “real food” meaning, no whey protein. During off season, I will supplement with protein post workout.

Year round, I use pre-workout and branch chain amino acids for recovery, and lipocide for fat burning.

What are the highlights of your fitness career?

The last time I stepped on stage I won overall in both novice and open bikini. That win and accomplishment gives you a feeling that can’t be explained! All the hard work that you have been pouring into yourself for the past 12+ weeks finally comes down to the moment.

Outside of competing, I get wonderful emails and messages from people who say that I have inspirited them and they have lost X body fat/weight. Hearing and knowing that I can make a positive impact in people’s lives gives me great pleasure.
