How To Accelerate Healing During Rotator Cuff Injury?

How To Accelerate Healing During Rotator Cuff Injury?

Have you torn your rotator cuff? Are you an athlete who is sidelined, watching your teammates compete, wanting to join them, or just want to get back to your routine activities? If you answered yes to any of these questions, there are a few things you can do to get back in the game more quickly.

Rotator cuff injury and its symptoms

It’s simply a partial or full tear of your shoulder’s rotator cuff tendons – a strong group of tissues that connect bones. It usually occurs in two ways, repeated micro-trauma or sudden intense trauma. Just as the name suggests, the first type of tear can take several weeks or even months to occur, while the latter occurs quickly after a heavy fall or lifting heavy weight. Here the common symptoms:

  • Mild shoulder pain, during shoulder elevation or when lifting hand above shoulder height or reaching behind your back – in case of partial tear
  • Severe shoulder pain and difficulty in raising elbow away from the body – in case of full rupture
  • Increased weakness
  • Impaired shoulder function
Treatment options

Small and medium tears usually heal without surgery and with just proper physiotherapy treatment and conservative management. Large tears might necessitate surgery, especially if physiotherapy fails to provide a cure. Getting the treatment started early is the key to a speedy healing because a delay can cause retraction of the tendon, making both the surgery and healing harder.

How to heal rotator cuff injury faster?

No matter you’ll be undergoing surgery or are treating the injury with physiotherapy, the goal is to get rid of the pain and get back to your normal life as soon as possible. While you might not be able to cure the injury on your own, but fortunately there are several things you can do to expedite the healing process.

Anti-inflammatory medicine and nutritional supplements

Your physician will give you pain-relieving medication, but also discuss the possibility of taking dietary supplements. Many experts advocate that these supplements can make a significant difference by helping your body recover. However, various supplements have different functions, and it’s important to consult your doctor before taking any of these as some supplements might interact with the medicine you are taking. For instance, vitamin C and E can help relieve pain, Bromelain can help reduce inflammation, and there are some other that can help cure musculoskeletal trauma.

Healthy diet

A healthy diet is a no-brainer. Try to eat greens, fruits, nuts, and lean meat. If you have surgery for the tear, consider quitting smoking and alcoholic beverages. Nicotine, in particular, can slow down the healing process after surgery. Researchers have shown that smokers are more prone to complications, infections, and experience slower healing as compared to non-smokers.

Better sleeping position

More and better quality sleep improve the function of your immune system and speeds up healing of any injuries. But if you have a rotator cuff injury, there are a few things that you have to be mindful of. First off, avoid lying on the affected shoulder and rest on the opposite side or your back. When sleeping on your back, propping up your injured shoulder with soft pillows can also ensure lesser stress on the damaged cuff.

Summary

Doing these three little things can be exceedingly helpful. However, these recommendations are only in addition to the more common ones like applying ice to the injured shoulder. Consider getting the best shoulder ice wrap) for better results. Moreover, gradually increase your range of motion and activity on the shoulder, and avoid doing too much too soon. Never try to push through pain or be overconfident and hurry through the rehab process or it’ll set your healing back as the recovery will take at least several weeks if not months.
