Gym Embarrassment: A Guide To Fitting In With Fitness Fanatics

It’s not something that is talked about often but, for many of us, walking into a gym can be a daunting experience.

First, there’s the equipment. What seems like miles of different equipment, all with names you don’t know and functions you can’t imagine you will ever master. There’s so much going on that you don’t know where to look or where to begin.

Secondly – and most importantly – there’s the other people. If you walk into a gym at the right time, then you find yourself surrounded by the bronzed and muscular masses. The bodybuilders pumping iron, the sleek women on the treadmill with a perfect amount of sweat on their finely-tuned abs. It’s overwhelming at the best of times, but even worse if you’re at the beginning of your journey to fitness.

It doesn’t take long to feel an overwhelming whisper in your ear: “I don’t belong here”. You feel left out; lumps, bumps, and a definite lack of the musculature you see on display from everyone else. You can’t work the machines and you don’t look the part, so surely, it’s only a matter of time before everyone is looking and laughing at you?

To some people, the above will sound extreme, perhaps even ridiculous. But for a huge section of gym-goers, it’s a ritualistic humiliation. Even if they persevere and are determined not to be put off, they’re more likely to choose very early or very late sessions so as to have as few other people occupying the gym at the same time.

It may even become a big enough problem to make you want to avoid the gym. No one wants to feel embarrassed, so why subject yourself to it? Or so the reasoning goes anyway.

Rather than try and convince anyone suffering from this problem that it’s fine and you do belong there, let’s leave the motivational stuff to one side. Instead, let’s look at practical solutions to a metaphysical problem.

1) Workout At Home

This doesn’t have to be forever. One day, with enough work at home, you will feel confident enough to step through the gym doors and hold your head up high. That means you can take advantage of all the facilities and advice they offer.

In the meantime before that breakthrough moment, why not try working out at home to improve your starting physique? Home gym equipment is more robust than you’d think and can give you a leg up before facing the gym environment. You can sweat, strain, prepare yourself, and contort to your heart’s content, knowing you’re the only witness to it. If you’re looking for stamina, you can learn more about treadmills for home use here, while strength can be improved with a simple set of weights.

2) Improve Your Gym Gear

The mistake any rookie gym-goer makes is to throw on any old clothes. It’s just working out – right? You’re only going to sweat on it!

In reality, you’ll be surprised by how much better you feel in a gym environment if you’re wearing specialist, even fashionable workout wear. If you want to fit in, then don’t try and beat them – join them. It’s far better to assimilate than go without a workout at all!
